Advertising informationRecreation therapy has emerged as a distinct area of scientific research with a distinct set of professional standards, yet very few arenas currently exist to share information specific to this field of specialization. The vacuum exists despite the fact that the demand for therapeutic-recreation services is broad and growing, and includes rehabilitation hospitals, mental-health and addiction facilities, hospitals, schools, park departments, elder-care services, and human service agencies. American Journal of Recreation Therapy was conceived as a forum to address this need. It serves as a sounding board for academics, practitioners, and other healthcare providers who use recreational interventions to improve functioning of individuals with illness or disabling conditions, including dementia, brain injury, substance abuse, physical and mental challenges, and psychiatric disorders.
